Abakhaya Marimba Band – High Energy Entertainment

I would like to dedicate my first post to Abakhaya Marimba Band. This is a very special band. They are truly the masters of the marimba. Below is a short video of Abakhaya, just to give you an idea of what these guys are capable of:

These guys have done a remarkable job over the years, advancing marimba music in Cape Town and all over the world. When I saw Abakhaya for the first time, I was amazed by their high energy playing style, as well as their ability to captivate a crowd. More than 14 years later, I am still amazed at this band’s performances.

Abakhaya have been trendsetters in the marimba music industry from the beginning. They have a great ability to appeal to all type of audiences – young and old, and people from a wide spectrum of music interests.

One of the features of Abakhaya is the fact that they also perform Opera music (they have a trained opera singer as a member).

Abakhaya have performed  at all over the world, including: France, Hong Kong, China, Seychelles and Singapore. Abakhaya have shared the stage with Lionel Richie in Cannes, France; along with other high profile international performers). The band has performed at various major events representing Cape Town and South Africa in exemplary fashion. These include:

  •  Performed in Hong Kong Cathay Pacific’s annual festival.
  •  Performed at the Presidents Cup for high ranking international guest
  •  Performed at a Nobel Peace Laureates function at the Waterfront in Cape Town . Nelson Mandela,  Desmond Tutu and FW De Klerk were among the many special guests.
  •  Performed at the J&B Met at Kenilworth on the main stage of the event.
  • Various events at the 1998 World Cup in France and 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

I will provide more on Abakhaya in a later post.
